PENCILS and PENS
Muggles don't use quill and ink! It's amazing the things they come up with. Now it is true that several hundred years ago, they did use quill and ink. Just like the rest of us, but where their muggle things will not work in our world, they have gone on ahead of us and found ways to get around the mess of ink! Muggles have invented a thing called 'pencils'. These come in two types. Wooden with bits of lead, made from a type of rock usually, and a mechanical version with the same rock substance inside but with usually plastic instead of wood and moving parts that give the user a chance to control how much of the lead they are using! Now it is true that in most cases they have to sharpen their wooden pencils by the use of a 'pencil sharpener' which has tiny blades in it that scrape the pencil down to a new point. Amazing!
Pens are even more interesting! They have ink INSIDE a long bit of metal. The pen has a cap, and can be put away for use at another time with no mess and no fuss! They have many moving parts and come in all different colors and types. This means they don't have to carry wells of ink around everywhere they go, spilling them this way and that and making blots on the parchment. I've passed around one of each type of pencil and one pen for everyone to look at. Please be careful, the muggle things tend to get fragile in Hogwarts.

Are pens and pencils better or worse than the quill and ink we use and why?
